My TURBO Beast

Brake Upgrade - Using TA63 Struts, with larger vented brakes.

The brake upgrade I have done uses TA63 type front struts complete with vented discs and calipers with larger surface brake pads. I used these because they came on the front-cut which I got my engine out of.

The Toyota TA63 comes in Japan with a 3T-GTEU engine, so it has to have good brakes, but it isn't available in Australia, not to worry, as the MX3x to MX6x Cressidas in Australia (Europe and the US I presume) come with the same disc rotors, calipers, and I think the whole strut is identical too.

The upgrade uses my original TE72 strut tops together with upper spring holders, the spring from the TE72 was also used because the TA63 springs were to big to fit into the TE72 upper spring holders and the TA63 upper spring holders scraped inside the strut tower when the steering wheel was turned. After installation the brake pedal did not feel any different, as the calipers and only single spot.

One major problem is camber. Positive camber that is, about 1.5 degree positive. I will try to fix this by using longer lower arms, either ~5mm longer ones from a XT130 Corona, or ~4cm(!) longer ones from a Cressida, with the later ones being alot harder to fit because anti-roll bar holes need to be changed, and some other mods need to be done, and also 4cm may be a little extreme for street use, as it may result with too much negative camber, not good for tyres or braking. If the ~4mm longer lower arm won't make too much of a difference, and won't give negative camber, I will get the struts bent, but only around 0.5 degrees.

Ohh look, its floating... the delorian

Old T-18 strut on the left (without the little single spot sliding caliper), and new TA63 strut on the right with a larger vented rotor and single spot, sliding caliper with larger brake pads.

This is how it looks like when there is no strut....

Old control arm on the top and new on the bottom.
