Brake Upgrade

Brake Upgrade - Using TA63 Struts, with vented discs.

This brake upgrade was performed on a 1980 TE72 T-18 Coupe (also known as a Corolla) but can also be carried out on early Celicas, and the AE86 Sprinter/Corolla Levin/Trueno.

The brake upgrade I have done uses TA63 type front struts complete with vented discs, and calipers with larger surface brake pads. I used these because they came on the front-cut which I got my engine out of. This is the most cost efficient upgrade possible, which gives alot better than stock braking.

The Toyota TA63 comes in Japan with a 3T-GTEU engine, so it has to have good brakes, but it isn't available in Australia, not to worry, as the MX3x to MX6x Cressidas in Australia (Europe and the US I presume) come with the same disc rotors, calipers, and I think the whole strut is identical too.

The upgrade uses my original TE72 strut tops together with upper spring holders, the spring from the TE72 also had to be used because the TA63 springs were to big to fit into the TE72 upper spring holders and the TA63 upper spring holders were to big to fit inside the strut tower. After installation the brake pedal did not feel any different/softer, this is due to the fact that the calipers are only single spot just like the standard ones.

One major problem is camber. Positive camber that is, about 1.5 degree positive. This can be fixed by using longer lower arms, ~4cm(!) longer ones from a Cressida, or Mitubishi Sigma arms, both need a bit of modifications to fit nicely. The 4cm longer Cressida arms may be a little extreme for everyday street use, as it may result with too much negative camber, not good for tyres or braking. But I guess it all comes down to how a person drives.
Just a quick note, that adjustable strut tops WILL NOT fix the camber problem. One person found out after spending $400 or so, for a set. But it may be a good idea to combine them with a set of longer arms, so you can adjust different camber for road and track.

Always remeber to use jack stands!

Old T-18 strut on the left (without the little single spot sliding caliper), and new TA63 strut on the right with a larger vented rotor and single spot, sliding caliper with larger brake pads.

Removed strut, and lower control arm, with balljoint still there.

Old control arm on the top and new on the bottom.
